Postal service gears up for holiday rush with expanded hours
The Postal Service says a condensed holiday window and strong start to Christmas shopping will require extra effort this year. About 20 billion items will move between Thanksgiving and Christmas, peaking December 16 with 850 million postmarked items. To cope, officials will extend hours including Sundays, add 44 cargo planes, and rely on better automation. UPS and FedEx also plan large seasonal hires and more trucks.
