Civil rights leader sought FBI help on Communists
Thurgood Marshall, then NAACP general counsel, sought FBI guidance in the early 1950s over Communist Party attempts to infiltrate the NAACP. FBI records show a 1952 memo noting his concern about communist influence, and Marshall later met with Louis B. Nichols after requesting Hoover. Marshall, who became a Supreme Court justice in 1967, remained critical of the FBI at times while also engaging with its investigations. The files detail Marshall’s pushback on race crime investigations and an exchange in which Hoover urged impartiality regardless of race.
