Papp to stand trial January 30 1978 in Keathley case
Timothy Papp will go on trial January 30 1978 for the March 1973 rape murder of nine year old Roxie Ann Keathley. Judge Paul J. Mikus announced the date after a hearing where he refused to remove himself from the case. The FBI crime lab may examine some physical evidence.

South Africa Train Crash Kills Three. 170 Hurt
A crowded passenger train collided with a freight train south of Johannesburg near Kidgrond, injuring 170 to 190 people and killing three. The freight reportedly plowed into the rear of the passenger train, which was packed with early morning shoppers.

Suspect held in Hillside stranglings case in LA
A 24 year old from Hesperia, Bennett Merrett, was booked on suspicion of robbery as police investigated his possible links to the Hillside stranglings in Los Angeles. He resembles the killer's composite and had women’s clothes in his car as detectives examine fingerprints and the gray Cadillac. The victims were 12 to 28 year olds found in bushes or along roads in the northeastern LA area.
