Groups Craft UMIT Proposals for 1955 Reserve Law

Universal Military Training Faces Big Fight in Congress

Washington reports a renewed drive by the Defense Department and allied groups to enact a universal military training and compulsory reserve plan replacing or expanding Selective Service. Proponents, led by the Legion and Security Training Commission, cite a stronger reserve and fairer conscription while major labor, farm, religious and educational groups oppose expansion, fearing cost and democratic impact. Entities include the American Legion, National Reserve Forces Policy Board, Reserve Officers Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, AFL, National Farmers Union, and national church bodies, with public lobbying and White House engagement expected ahead of a 1935 congressional push.
