NRC officials debate extending Davis-Besse plant license
NRC associate director Brian Sheron says the agency asked for full information to argue for operating beyond December 31 but did not receive it. Davis-Besse on Lake Erie near Toledo has been shut since February after boric acid leaks corroded a reactor lid. The leaks appeared during a March maintenance shutdown, revealing the worst corrosion at a U.S. reactor and triggering a nationwide review of 69 plants. A 2000 FirstEnergy report surface showed rust staining from inspection ports, explaining how boric acid sludge ate the lid. Sheron notes if three to four inches of acid had been known, questions would have intensified earlier.
