The W G Nord Community Mental Health Center will start the Nord Center Mental Health Foundation to fund services beyond tax support. Elyria police are hunting a man after a 25 year old resident, Michael Walton of 122 Portia Court, was beaten with a baseball bat during an argument at his home. Walton remained in serious condition at Elyria Memorial Hospital with head injuries. police had a suspect but no arrest.
Elyria judge will decide later on Ralph Fox's shock probation request. Fox of 207 Fourth St pleaded guilty to felony theft for taking a client deposit on an unbuilt home and was sentenced to 18 months. He also faced charges of practicing real estate without a license and agreed to restitution.
The Ohio Department of Insurance will hold a public hearing January 18 in Cleveland to consider Blue Cross Blue Shield of Northern Ohio rate increase requests. Residents urged denial for direct billed customers. Two requests affect hospital cost coverage and ten cover doctors' bills. the department may approve a smaller hospital rise but must approve all or none for the doctors' coverage.
The Black River Astronomical Society will host a Halley's Comet slideshow at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Lorain County Metroparks Carlisle Reservation Visitors Center in LaGrange. Society President Mike Harkey will share photos from his Australia trip last spring, with public telescope viewing possible if skies are clear.
LaGrange officials plan to drill in front of the Municipal Hall to heat the building and a nearby garage. Secretary-clerk Linda Moore says savings could exceed 2000 dollars annually. An existing well found during sewer excavations is being expanded. Boreman drilling started a month ago at a 4000 dollar cost and should finish by year end.
