Heavy winds and plummeting temperatures lash northeastern Ohio as a winter storm warning prompts up to 3 inches of snow locally and a foot in the snowbelt east of Cleveland. Fires fueled by gusts burn homes in Elyria Pittsfield and nearby townships as outages hit hundreds. Officials note ongoing snowfall overnight tapering Tuesday.
Seventh and eighth graders from the area will compete in the Chronicle Telegram regional spelling bee in spring 1986. An organizational meeting is set for December 12 at the Elyria Holiday Inn to outline dates for the preliminaries and selection process.
A travel advisory warns of very cold conditions with diminishing winds and light flurries tonight affecting Lorain County western Cuyahoga and parts of Erie Huron. Invitations go to about 50 schools for a planning session with key contacts listed. Heather Cassidy of Lorain is headed to the National Spelling Bee in Washington in April.
Four occupants escaped a Harvard Avenue house fire by leaping from a second floor window shortly after 1 am. High winds and freezing rain hampered firefighters who fought the blaze for about 45 minutes. All four were treated for minor injuries at Elyria Memorial Hospital. The dog died. Damages were estimated at 45 000 dollars.
New York Giants placekicker Eric Schubert misses a final seconds field goal as Cleveland Browns pull ahead 35 23 in a dramatic late game showing. Schubert walks off the field under heavy public scrutiny with the loss tolling.
In Parma Ohio a man identified as Michael A. Gurdy 28 died Sunday after trading gunfire with police Friday that wounded Patrolman Donald Cawthra 42. Cawthra was in fair condition at Parma Community General Hospital. Gurdy died at the same hospital. The exchange occurred outside an apartment complex following an anonymous tip about a car theft suspect.
Amherst trio Bernadine Wagner Lisa Wagner and Rose Evans returned home from Liberia after delays. Peace Corps volunteer Lisa completed service Nov 10 and the travelers were rerouted to Monrovia then to Amsterdam. Passports were held for safekeeping as Liberia’s borders and air travel were restricted. They planned to reach Amherst by late November.
