Cleveland Electric to retire Avon Lake unit by year end
CEI will close an aging 200 MW unit at Avon Lake Plant by year end, with no job losses. The shutdown cuts local tax payments by about 450000, affecting city and Lorain County revenues. CEI remains the county’s second largest taxpayer, paying roughly 7 million annually. Four Avon Lake units and four Lake Shore units will continue, with job impacts at most a dozen. Retirement saves about 4 million yearly plus further capital expenditure cuts, lowering customer costs overall.
