Market off to hot start in early trading
New York stocks opened strong with the Dow up 9.18 to 808.21 as gains led 5 to 1 on the NYSE. The market then slid after hours as the Fed reported money supply fell 1.9 billion and Carter voiced confidence. The dollar rose against the yen past 200 for the first time in four months. Volume on the NYSE reached 19.90 million shares, with the composite up 51 to 52.89 and the AMEX index up 2.26 to 148.39.

About 820000 UAW workers in North American plants of General Motors Ford and Chrysler will see a 19 cent per hour rise in their cost of living allowance effective Dec 4. Thirteen cents comes from CPI changes, six cents restores inflation protection funds diverted since June 1977.
