Oberlin stabbing investigated as attempted murder

Police question at least 20 suspects in the Saturday stabbing of 20 year old Oberlin College coed Janet Elizabeth Weiler from Hales Corners Wisconsin. No one detained and 100 volunteers aid search while a knife and gloves are recovered.

Thanksgiving holiday toll falls short of record estimate

United Press International reports for the 102 hour Thanksgiving weekend at least 648 people died on highways, far under the NSC forecast of up to 800 and well below last year’s 764. California led with 67 fatalities, followed by Texas 39, Georgia 38, New York 36, and others with multiple deaths across states. A family of three perished near Corpus Christi amid a two car crash. another crash near Seattle involving over 50 vehicles occurred in dense fog and ice. Six killed near Harré De Grace, Maryland, when a tank truck crashed into two autos on the John F Kennedy Memorial Parkway.

Ohio Toll For Thanksgiving Weekend Total 23 Fatalities

Ohio's weekend traffic toll reached 23 deaths from 6 p.m. Wednesday Thanksgiving Eve to midnight yesterday as motorists crowded highways. The Ohio Highway Patrol reported the lowest five year total since 1965 1966 1967 1968 figures. One fire death two hunting deaths and one farm accident added to the grim count during the 102 hour holiday.

309 Oberlin pledge to snub draft at OC

Oberlin College sees 309 male students sign a pledge to refuse induction as long as the Vietnam War continues. About 76 faculty back the pledge from roughly 2,600 students representing 20 to 25 percent of the male student body.

U S Forces in Viet Nam Drop to Two Year Low

UPI reports U S troop withdrawal under President Nixon reduced U S forces in Vietnam to 479,500, the lowest since December 1967, with 4,900 troops leaving last week. The pullback completes a 60,000-troop reduction, amid ongoing bombardments near Bu Prang and Duc Lap as North Vietnamese pressure continues around Christmas.

Reactions vary worldwide to grisly Song My massacre photos and eyewitness reports of alleged atrocities in Vietnam. In Saigon, Thieu and Ky clash over what happened March 16 1968 as the Army cites a separate murder charge against Lt. William L. Father of five dies in crash on East 28th Street

A 36 year old father of five, Alexander Szuch, died at St Joseph Hospital after a two car crash on East 28th Street near Caroline Avenue at 1 40 a m. Michael A Neri, 20, in the second car, was listed in guarded condition with head wounds and a concussion. Police said witnesses were unavailable and traffic investigators were reviewing scene photos to determine exact sequence of events. No charges filed. Obituary on page 16.

Bailey says Medina vilified by news reports

UPI reports Army Captain Ernest L Medina, once commander of a company tied to the Song My massacre, says he is being vilified by news, has hired F Lee Bailey, and seeks a White House briefing. Bailey notes Medina has not been charged and claims he issued no orders to kill.

Hanoi reports 336 civilians killed in Viet Cong campaign

Hanoi radio says South Vietnamese troops killed 336 civilians in a two month campaign in the U Minh Jungle southwest of Saigon. It cites 107 killed in Kanh Lam village Ca Mau Province and 229 in six other villages.

Cruiser 13 Ends Two-Week Service After Crash

Patrolman Wilfred Castro pursued a drag racing car when his cruiser struck Herman Wren’s vehicle at 16th and Broadway. The impact sent the cruiser into a building at 1562 Broadway. Castro received hospital treatment and was released with no charges filed.
