Time Flows Through Berlin Partition and Postwar Events

A retrospective recalls events from December 1 1948 to December 1 1944. Berlin’s partition deepened as Mayor Friedensburg was barred from City Hall and West Berlin took over administration while Ohio draftees began 21 months of training at Fort Knox. Navy football figure Captain Tom Hamilton sought Pitt athletic director post amid program expansion rumors. Five years earlier Allied armies pressed into Ruhr and Saar as Patton’s Third Army prepared for the Saar advance and the First and Ninth clashed near the Ruhr. Hines became Harshaw Chemical Company Elyria plant manager after long service, and Edward R Stettinius was confirmed as Secretary of State by a 67 to 1 vote.
