Former President Hoover Slams Gov Rolph Over San Jose Lynchings

In San Francisco on December 1, former President Herbert Hoover and California Governor James Rolph Jr. clashed over the San Jose lynchings and the Bonus Army episode in Washington. Hoover criticized Rolph for praising the lynching and warned that state troops could have averted bloodshed. Rolph denied advocating lynch law and defended lawful action, noting California would not tolerate kidnapping. Frank Allen mounts a small soft coal stove in his car to provide heat as the vehicle runs. He notes the stove drafts better at speed while smoke pours from a roof vent, illustrating a quirky postwar era ingenuity and a shift in focus from solidity to fragility.
