Grim double execution ends brutal crimes in Ohio

Hoppe and John Rucker were executed by electric chair after pleading guilty to murder and assault. Hoppe, accompanied by prison chaplain Father O'Brien, died on the chair at 7 25 p.m., five minutes after the current began. Rucker, baptized hours earlier, showed calm acceptance. Both men faced heavy defense appeals, all rejected, as warden Thomas oversaw a seventh such execution on his birthday. The sentences followed the Seca łowsky home invasion and the murder of a Toledo schoolteacher, with victims' families awaiting the outcomes.
