Reporters recount the two hour syndicated capture of the sunken Andrea Doria bank safe on August 16. The shelf divided compartments held over 25 000 currency bills from the United States and Italy with Deutsche marks and traveler’s checks. A hidden envelope marked Hold Under Lock and Key spurred further intrigue as conservators prepare to inspect a document from Credito Italiano. Gimbel estimates face value above 100 000 dollars though total amount remains undetermined due to tightly packed notes. The program aired on 170 stations and drew record ratings across the nation.
