Cleveland prepares for a multi day 1972 air show at Burke Lakefront Airport expected to draw about 50 000 people daily. Major acts include the Thunderbirds Lips Prime Precision team Knights and US Army parachute team with veteran pilot Robert A Hoover. Zoning hearing denies multi-family rezoning at Westlake

A zoning request by Mrs. Betty Farver to rezone land near Clague and Center Ridge roads for multi-family use was denied by the zoning board. The session resembled a courtroom with 70 residents, attorneys, and city officials weighing hardship and neighborhood character before the decision.

Westlake Board Grants Three Side Yard Variances

After a public hearing, Westlake's Board of Zoning Appeals approved three side yard variances. Carl Espy of Nuts Inc. won 15 feet for a warehouse addition due to no neighbor complaints and prior code differences. Henry Bruscino Jr. received a variance as measurement errors moved his new home closer to a neighbor. Don Mellinger gained permission for a central air unit in the side yard because of lot shape and a creek, reducing impact on neighbors.

Cleveland Briefs Highlight Homicide Toll and Indictments

Cleveland police report 210 homicides for the year after Selena Hannig 17 was stabbed and Robert Hawkins 32 shot dead. Prosecutor Grendel ruled Hawkins death justifiable after a knife threat. A grand jury indicted five welfare movers on 18 counts of larceny by trick totaling 1492 dollars. Also U S Representative Blatnik was admitted to Cleveland Clinic for heart condition evaluation.

Bay Library Announces Story Hour Series

Bay Village launches a new series for 3 and 4 year olds starting October 4 at the Bay Library. Sessions run first and third Wednesdays monthly at 10 and 10 45 a m and 1 30 p m with pre registration from September 5. A mothers discussion group will meet during the 10 a m story hour.

Westlake couple carves apple head dolls display at library

In Westlake Mrs. Lucille Hayes and her husband Lloyd craft dolls with faces carved from apples. The process takes 20 to 45 minutes to carve, then five to six weeks of drying before sealing with lacquer. A dozen dolls are on display at Porter Library, after earning fifth place at the County Fair.

Mayfield Road Drive-In sued for $2.25 million over carbon monoxide injuries

Demetrius Terentiuk, 20, and his parents sue The Mayfield Road Drive-In Theater Inc in Geauga County for negligence after Terentiuk and Robin Oblander, 17, were exposed to carbon monoxide while the engine ran to stay warm. A sheriff found the pair after a 4:20 a.m. call. Oblander died, Terentiuk lost use of both legs and faces medical costs over $24,000.

Poison Queen of Cleveland Dies at 84 in Reformatory

Emma Colavito once dubbed the Poison Queen of Cleveland died at Ohio Reformatory for Women in Marysville at age 84. A nurse by trade, she served life terms for the 1920 murder of Marino Costanzo and earlier faced trials related to the 1919 slaying of publisher Daniel J. Kaber. Her case spanned multiple trials, imprisonments, and a controversial survival of major surgery in 1955.

Workman Injured as Ditch Collapses in Brookpark

A Brookpark man working on a sewer excavation on Allen Drive was injured when a ditch collapsed burying him up to his waist. Tony Pariello was treated at Bay View Hospital for back and facial injuries after rescue by Westlake Fire Department crews.
