Chestnut trees defy the odds at Ohio quarry site
In a northeast Ohio sand stone quarry four large flowering American chestnut trees and hundreds of saplings survive despite the blight that wiped out most. Greg Miller of the American Chestnut Foundation Ohio notes this is a vital gene source for breeding. Elden Shounce owns the quarry and efforts include pollen blight resistance and back crossing to create hybrids. The stand faces ongoing risk from the fungus, described as a race against time.
