At the Ohio State Fair in Columbus, fair officials said they would ignore a complaint from Hugh McNamee alleging cruelty in the George Holmes Rodeo set for three days next week. Gov. Rhodes and the Expositions Commission were notified as the event proceeded with Humane Society observers present.
Washington GOP vice presidential hopeful William E. Miller criticized Democrats for guiding the nation into war four times in a century and warned he would raise civil rights if it helps the campaign. He labeled Johnson administration policies as phony and hoax during a western New York swing ahead of the official campaign kickoff.
Lorain County records a grim traffic tally with two more fatalities in a three car crash on Route 254 in Avon near Avon Oaks Country Club. A 22 year old woman and another passenger died at St. Joseph Hospital after a head on collision involving a pickup truck and two cars. Police say one car crossed the center line and struck Killian’s vehicle, with both vehicles leaving the road. The crash remains under investigation as funeral plans are announced.
Rioters roved through an all-Negro district in North Philadelphia injuring police, smashing shops, and looting drugs, liquor, furniture, and clothing. Police blocked the area with 500 officers, 31 officers injured, 72 civilians hospitalized, over 100 arrests, and shutdowns ordered by officials including Gov Scranton.
Savannah reports from UPI describe looting along Columbia Avenue as crowds ransacked shops and disabled meters while Hurricane Cleo churns northward dumping heavy rains on coastal Georgia and threatening to spawn tornadoes in the Carolinas.
Nguyen Xuan Quan, known as Canh, a U.S. educated civil servant and former deputy premier for economic affairs, is appointed acting premier by Saigon’s military rulers amid a police crackdown on Catholic and Buddhist youth gangs. Three hundred arrested. calmer streets as Khanh shares power with generals Minh and Khieu.
The Lorain County Fair in Wellington extended into a bonus day as attendance set a new high with 106,460 five day total. Nearly all rides concessions and exhibits ran while livestock and Columbus bound visitors still left the grounds. Tuesday night drizzle barely interrupted five days of favorable weather. Last night at about 11 o'clock.
