Police captured Joe Carr of Cleveland at the depot with a stolen film titled Human Wreckage and a complete drug kit. He refused to talk, saying the gang would steal more films to disrupt the narcotics expose. The film was to be shown during fair week, a target of the ring seeking to halt its release.
Columbus Aug 29 Ohio miners show keen interest yet hold tight as to possible anthracite strike Sept 1. Lea Hall president of the Ohio United Mine Workers says Ohio miners will support a settlement but will not break the contract expiring March 31 1924. Hall backs the anthracite cause while noting Ohio wages are higher and mines steadier. He predicts some miners may move to Ohio if a strike occurs and cites overproduction and many mines idle in southern Ohio post inspection. Governor Pinchot is trusted to secure a square deal.
The registration at the Teachers' Institute reached 250 with delegates from across the county. Miss Ove Jones spoke on The Ideas of a Plain Home Woman, urging improvements in small schools and sharing practical ideas. Miss Florence Hale advocated higher salaries and careful hiring to fit each role. This year features two women instructors and one man, replacing two male instructors.
Three Flint attorneys are dead after a car veered off the road and collided head on with an interurban near Mt Morris Michigan. Judges Marshall M Fyrisbin Clark M Johnson and Clay M Wilbur are the deceased. Two others are seriously injured.
The body of a three month old infant matching Lillian Helen McKenzie's description was recovered from the Hudson River after 123 days missing. Peter McKenzie was summoned to identify the body at a police station as authorities planned a medical exam to determine death cause.
Columbus August 29 Major J A M Buescher former assistant superintendent of the Boys Industrial School Lancaster has been appointed head of the institution by State Welfare Director Harper Buescher has headed the school since Captain C W Rowe was removed last winter and served overseas in World War I.
Jas Brady a 34 year old butcher killed his wife Margaret at their Sandusky home and was arrested leaving the house. Police say Brady beat Mrs Brady into unconsciousness with a hammer then cut her throat with a razor. Mrs Brady had filed for divorce the day before.
Ohio editors surveyed by International News Service name Governor James M. Cox as the leading Democratic presidential candidate due to his executive ability and role as party advocate for the League of Nations. McAdoo, Underwood, and Ralston also receive notable support, with others mentioned as possible contenders.
Dayton Ohio August 29 John Soddere 43 will be returned to the Ohio penitentiary today to remain for life unless pardoned or paroled for the murder of Andy oe during a hold up in 1904. Soddere was convicted and served in prison until 1920 then he escaped. He located at Salem D this was married and lived a model life. He was arrested late yesterday at his home. Two men named Stroeder and Beeling were sentenced with him for the part they played in the bold act but were pardoned in 1921.
Rome Aug 29 Relations between Italy and Greece strained by the assassination of General Tetini and other officials as talks move toward realigning the Graeco American frontier. Italy demands punishment of assassins and full reparation. Athens cites brigands and notes the crime near a Greek military outpost. Mussolini leads a vigorous inquiry with dispatches to London and Paris. The Albanian charge d affaires cites Greek hatred over Albania’s village assignments. The newspaper Messagero alleges 30 Greeks carried out the killings.
Madrid August 29 King Alfonso signed a pardon for Corporal Barros sentenced to death by court martial for mutiny at Malaga. Cabinet discord grows over Moroccan war and a crisis looms as General Weyler notes many rebels come from French Morocco. The Espana cruiser ran aground near Melilla and is deemed a total loss.
Ku Klux Klan officials announce the first public initiation in northern Ohio at the Cuyahoga county fair grounds in Chagrin Falls on September 1. About 100 new members will be inducted and about 26,000 Klansmen are expected to attend.
Manila reports say Filipino lawmakers aboard the Philippine Parliamentary Delegation to Japan faced sharp rebuke from Japanese press. Senator Francisco Enage urged diplomatic support for Philippine independence, noting collaboration with a free Philippines would suit both nations better than a dependent state.
