Elyria Ohio Invacare Corp. chairman A Malachi Mixon III condemns the United Steelworkers organizing drive begun in July. He argues unions raise costs and harm competitiveness, while defending wages as competitive. Union official Pat Gallagher says the drive is progressing at Invacare.
Elyria plans to buy the former police station at West Avenue and Broad Street after 20 years of leasing. City Council votes Sept 8 to purchase from the Ely Foundation for just over $50,000, with the city to cover half the closing costs. Mayor Keys says the deal could yield a profit.
Elyria reports progress on the Fourth Street Bridge with pedestrians already crossing. The project is two months ahead of schedule and paving is set for September 3 and 4 with striping the next week. City Engineer John Hart said the bridge may reopen the week of Labor Day if weather cooperates. Vehicles have been stopped since August 1997. ODOT says the bridge replacement continues.
