Wildcat strike at GM plant protests overtime recalls

About 500 to 550 laid off UAW members at Elyria's Brown-Lipe-Chapin plant initiated a spontaneous wildcat strike. Pickets blocked two gates early morning, demanding recalls based on plant wide seniority while overtime favored current workers. GM reported 600 plus hourly workers barred from work. salaried staff continued on site. The action lacked official UAW authorization and followed weeks of overtime disparity and recalls debate.

Northwest airliner crash near Minneapolis injures 49

A Northwest DC6B with 60 aboard crashed shortly after takeoff from Wold-Chamberlain, injuring 49 and killing no one. Among the injured were Rep. Don Magnuson and three others seriously hurt. The plane struck Gerald Christian’s farm, igniting a fire that destroyed the potato shed.

Navy unveils underwater guided missile system from subs

The Navy announced an underwater guided missile, the Mark 39, to be fired from submarines and guided by a wire trailing from the launch vessel. Officials did not disclose range. In a separate briefing, the Army reported a rocket motor test tied to Nike Zeus, yielding several hundred thousand pounds of thrust, over 450,000 pounds, at Redstone Arsenal.

Car plunge into culvert on Ohio Turnpike near West River Rd

A late yesterday accident drew 18 bystanders on the bridge over the Ohio Turnpike at West River Rd as Elza Painter captured the scene. The driver, Henry W. Mober, 75, of Minneapolis, plowed into a culvert and was admitted to Elyria Memorial Hospital.

Gale Daisy Threatens East Coast With 125 MPH Winds

Avon Village Council set a special election for January 20 1959 to decide a charter form of government. A half mill recreation levy for five years totaling 25000 was also placed on the November ballot. Driver Hurt In 3 Car Pike Crash

Three cars were involved in a 5 p m Ohio Turnpike mishap. Henry W. Mober 75 Minneapolis suffered multiple fractures and internal injuries and was admitted to Elyria Memorial Hospital in fair condition. The crash occurred as Melvin Griffith 43 Owatoonna Minn attempted to pass Griffith’s car and struck Mober’s auto driving him into Glen Nolin 45 Martinton IL. The Mober car went off pavement into a culvert at Black River Bridge as investigators continue.
