Wheat and oats grow two crops from one seed in Ohio

Weather in early season and late May frost cause a rare double harvest in Ohio crops. Wheat and oats sprouted a second time after drought followed by rain, producing a second growth often taller than the first. Farmers see potential for two harvests from one sowing in rare fields like Auglaize County.

Corn Borer Reaches South and West. OSU Unveils Harvester Attachments

The European corn borer, first found in Ohio in 1921, has moved into Carroll Holmes and Henry counties. Ohio State University engineers near complete a corn harvester attachment to cut stalks close to the ground and shred or destroy them, preventing borers from wintering in old stubble. Harvesters will bolt onto common binders and be low cost. Extension entomologist T H Parks notes borers rise in the Lake Erie area, with some fields over 50 percent. Canadians face harvest losses where corn is husked from stalks rather than stored in silos. The insect likely reached Canada a decade before major damage.
