Quasars Edge Time and Space, Distant Beacons
Scientists report strong evidence that quasars lie near the edge of time and space, acting as distant beacons from the universe’s birth. They verified companion galaxies traveling with quasars at near light speeds, suggesting quasars formed at the universe’s origin and seen from up to 10 billion light years away. The findings, by Heckman, Smith, Bothun, Balick, used 158 inch telescopes at Kitt Peak and Cerro Tololo, funded by the NSF.
