He reportedly refused a duel with a husband of a woman he was said to have wronged. As he lay dying Bergen drew from his pocket a scrap of paper bearing the words Cline Arrested. George Kline killed me. Kline was arrested and today was a prisoner in Hackensack New Jersey jail charged with murder.
The French battleship France struck a submerged rock off Quiberon and nearly sank immediately but remained afloat for hours before disappearing. Initial reports claimed all crew saved, later advisories said crew members were drowned after the collision on Friday night.
Aug 28 jail time followed a misissued warrant for Fred E Crawford based on a claim by Mamie Crawford 24 alleging fault and battery by her husband. The arrest occurred at his parents home after police detained the father while she corrected the mistaken name. He was released after Mamie Crawford identified him as not the wanted man.

Following Judge James G Johnson’s resignation to pursue the Democratic gubernatorial nomination a vacancy opens on the state ticket. Judge George H Clark holds the seat until a successor is elected at the next general election. Prospective candidates must file by September 8 with 21 000 Ohio voters signatures. Officials expect a write in result if Clark runs and faces no opponent.
Delman Smith, founder and publisher of the Indianapolis News, a noted philanthropist, died at his Lake Forest summer home after acute anemia and multiple blood transfusions.
