Resources down as Avon Lake center closes Friday
Avon Lake Human Resources Center will shut its office to operate at a minimum level with a phone answering machine and a post office box remaining. Director Laurie Smith said the center handled about 150 weekly cases, mainly family crises, but funding vanished after Lorain County Mental Health Board merged funds into Nord Center in Lorain. The center once had a $140,000 yearly budget in February 1984 and now employs three full time staff, including Smith and two workers, with Smith volunteering in crises and seeking support from the city and United Way. A Elyria High School Class of 1934 50th reunion cocktail party at the Elyria Country Club drew 126 members and continues tonight.
