Ohio crop program notes indicate no potato marketing vote for farmers this year and no state restrictions on corn marketing. Wheat insurance applications can be filed until August 31 after a date shift at farmer request. Ohio ranks high in insurance applications. Liming Boosts Meadow Yields with Alfalfa over Soybeans

E E Barnes of the Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station notes liming to neutralize soil pH dramatically raises hay yields. Soybeans on unlimed land average 2416 pounds per acre, limed land yields reach 3061 pounds, while alfalfa on limed soil yields 3518 pounds per acre. Alfalfa also triples crude protein per acre to 720 pounds, versus 288 pounds with soybeans. The switch requires about 34 percent tons of ground limestone per acre and costs under $12 on average, with alfalfa meadow harvests lasting 1 to 3 years compared with yearly reseeding for soybeans.
