Columbia Township Seeks Tractor Bid For Equipment
Columbia Township trustees will prepare specifications for bids on a new diesel tractor and mower for approval at the Sept. 7 board meeting. Interim leasing of mowing equipment was authorized at up to 250 per month for two months. A prior 16 month lease with a Kabota tractor was rescinded to follow formal bidding thresholds. Per cost sharing, 40 percent charge to parks 40 percent to cemetery and 20 percent to roads. The board also scheduled a Sept. 7 meeting at 7:30 p.m. to avoid Labor Day conflict and plans a site visit with Gilgenbach Construction to inspect grading work after waterline improvements.

Amherst ballot tests annexation of township area
Amherst voters in November will decide on annexing seven square miles of Amherst Township east of the city to join Amherst. The council unanimously approved the measure amid supporter and opponent silence. If approved, the area would grow by 33 percent, and voting would be limited to residents in the affected area. A portion of the land is tied to a dispute with Lorain developer Edward Gargasz who has begun homes in Hidden Valley off Oberlin Road. Columbia denies variance request for dwelling size
Victory Construction’s bid to build a bi level home in West View Park Subdivision was blocked by the Columbia Zoning Board of Appeals. The panel ruled a 30 percent variance would set a dangerous precedent given a 60 by 125 foot lot, denying the variance sought for a 1080 square foot first floor and 1140 square foot total living area. A separate hearing on another variance filed by Gregory Hapata was scheduled.
