Hoax radio reports swirl around missing Greater Rockford

Madison Aug 24 Belief grows that radio messages attributed to Bert Hassell and Parker Cramer of the missing Greater Rockford are a hoax. Don Mix, former polar expedition radio operator, helped install and adjust the Rockford’s radio, saying the prankster may have signed the messages. A Toledo receiver also noted a beer reference, which Mix cites as the key clue. The plane’s fate remains uncertain as Greenland officials report a sighting near Greenland’s western coast. Mysterious broadcasts hinder the search, with some messages claiming a landing on an island north of Newfoundland and asking United Press to be notified.
