One Killed And Several Hurt In Accidents
Lorain Countys 1937 traffic toll rose to 40 with P C Archer 32 of 1244 West Erie Avenue Lorain dying at St Josephs Hospital from an East Erie Avenue crash. Archer passed another car cut back into traffic lost control hit a curb struck a tree rolled over pinned underneath. He suffered a fractured skull broken collar bone several broken ribs and severe lacerations. He was a fireman by occupation. Four Elyrians were injured near the Lorain County line on Route 20 with Mrs Howard Thornton 24 hospitalized for a fractured forearm and lacerations the others treated and discharged. Grafon man Hart Severin Ott 49 was treated for lac erations after being struck by a car driven by Myron Hinkle. Deputies said Ott stepped into the path of the car at LaPorte Routes 57 and 10. Others escaped injuries or sustained minor cuts in separate crashes on Foster Road Broad Street West Avenue and Huron and West streets. The report notes many more crashes during the weekend.

Partly cloudy tonight and Tuesday with little temperature change. A high pressure system was over western Ontario Saturday and moved northeast to the St Lawrence region, while a northwest disturbance centers near Medicine Hat. Rain affected areas east of the Mississippi and in the western plateau states with many Ohio stations reporting over an inch. Warmer weather spread west with temperatures near 100 in the Dakotas and Montana yesterday.

Subway Accident Injures 29 in Newark Bound Train Crash
Twenty nine passengers were injured when a five car subway train from Newark jumped the track and struck a retaining wall in the Hudson tubes. TIENTSIN August 23 Japan rushed a powerful Kwantung army southward through Jehol to attack in the rear of Nankow Pass northwest of Peiping. They aimed at Kalgan 30 miles northwest and along the Kalgan Peiping railroad to strike the Nankow defenders, who have held the pass in mud and floods for weeks. Chinese leaders prepared for a stand at Changpel northeast of Kalgan, hoping to halt the new threat. Chinese said advance Kalgan units were repelled and five towns retaken.

Elyria American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps begins training for the national competition in New York after recalling rookie days from 1917 and 1918. Capt Kinney and 12th Engineers staff supervise drills three nights weekly, with a special train and horse Lady Cream Puff leading the party to Washington and Philadelphia for an invitational pre contest.
