Precinct committeemen for Lorain and surrounding areas selected by Democrats and Republicans at recent primaries. Some precincts left without selections to be appointed later. Listed are winners in Lorain City wards and numerous townships and villages across Lorain County with names and addresses of elected committeemen from both parties.
British scientists reported unsuccessful attempts to receive signals from Mars using a 24 valve receiver in Dudiwich. Professor Norman Edwards detected periodic dots but doubted they were Martian signals. Royal Observatory Greenwich confirmed no notable Mars activity. In Flagstaff Lowell Observatory, American scientists asserted Mars is habitable with vegetation and no conclusive animal life, aided by close up photographs.
In New York a strangled aging radio experimenter possibly Aaron Graff 72 is identified only by teeth and features. His partner Lugosy and box owner Raas are tied to the case as detectives probe disappearance clues and a cache of tar plaster and cement in Lugosy’s cellar.
Weather bulletin from Washington on August 23 predicts a mostly fair start to the week with occasional local showers possible later. Temperatures expected to run above normal early, then cooler toward the end of the week.
Lorain County Board of Health reports health work in 1923 and 1924 across public and parochial schools in Lorain County. German parliament adjourned without action on the Dawes plan and the London agreement as chaos and protests erupted. Chancellor Marx and key ministers urged acceptance while Stresemann spoke for the operations plan. Across the globe, traffic and accidents claimed several lives in Ohio Kentucky and Ohio as fog and road conditions caused multiple fatalities.
Eugene Sites received Governor Donahey's letter in which he calls Lorain disaster propaganda false and asserts his involvement has been transparent. He says he aided those in need and did not seek compensation, refuting claims of refused aid and exaggeration of the disaster.
Sabina Ohio August 23 A fire swept through five homes starting around nine this morning. Three residents were burned to the ground and five others seriously injured as flames raged in gusty winds. Local firemen fought hard before aid from Washington Court House and Wilmington arrived.
Frank Scardina of Lorain files for divorce from Anna Scardina citing extreme cruelty and gross neglect. He says they separated in March by mutual agreement and alleges she has lived with other men since, seeking custody of their four children.
Clarence Darrow urged mercy and life terms for Nathan Leopold Jr. and Richard Loeb in Chicago, arguing their minds were diseased and hanging them would not help. He spoke softly yet forcefully, urging charity and warning of hate spreading through society as the trial nears its end.
