The Oberlin City Council, in a unanimous vote after about an hour of public comment, renamed the second Monday in October from Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day. Supporters argue it corrects a historical imbalance while opponents urged careful consideration of tradition. Morning Dove Jean Simon spoke for the Indigenous Peoples Day Committee thanking the council.
President Donald Trump outlines a strategy he believes will position the United States to declare victory in Afghanistan. He spoke Monday at Fort Myer in Arlington Virginia outlining steps and goals for pursuing peace and success in the conflict.
In North Ridgeville, Ohio a partial solar eclipse shaded the sky as 50 pairs of glasses vanished quickly at Sandy Ridge Reservation. Park official Tim Fairweather noted many visitors arrived early for viewing the first eclipse here since 1994.
Bai ley Wise, 18, was crowned Lorain County Junior Fair Queen at the Lorain County Fair ceremony on Monday. Wise cried with emotion while thanking 4-H and fair participants, saying she did not expect to win and that everyone up there deserves to win.
Gates open at 8 a.m. with open class judging for rabbit and cavy in Barn 38 and 39. Junior Fair cat judging, swine, miniature horse, dairy cattle, sheep, poultry, small animals, and more run through the day. Harness racing at 11 a.m. and dog agility at 6 p.m. Dustin Lynch headlines at 7:30 p.m.
