Reading Habits Split Amid Decline in Books Read

A nationwide AP Ipsos poll shows 57 percent of American adults read a book in 2002, down from 60 in 1999 and 63 in 1990. Nearly a third of men and a quarter of women read no books that year, with older, less educated, lower income, rural, minority, and less religious groups most affected. Readers vary by region and party affiliation, while women dominate most genres except history and biography. The survey, conducted Aug 6–8 with 1,003 adults, notes religious texts remain the top category and fiction about half, with romance at 20 percent. Global publishing rose 3 percent to $35.7 billion, 3.1 billion books sold.
