Gas worries boost fair attendance at Lorain County Fair

Wellington Lorain County Fair enters its second day with attendance up 2 708 over opener. Fair officials say gasoline shortages are turning the event into a vacation alternative. Total admissions yesterday reached 23 258 plus thousands admitted free on Golden Agers Day. Tractor pulling, harness racing and balloon ascent highlighted a busy schedule with events into the night and many grandstand seats available.

U S abandons PLO rights resolution in U N

UPI reports Middle East Ambassador Robert Strauss said the United States has abandoned plans to introduce a U N resolution on Palestinian rights. He denied Carter policy chaos, noted administration scrapped a compromise before the Security Council, and said the U S will veto any Arab call for an independent Palestinian state.

Elyria Republican Nominees Dor othy Klimczak for City Auditor

Dorothy Klimczak, wife of Ward 6 Councilman Felix Klimczak, is the Republican nominee for Elyria City Auditor in November. She was unanimously chosen after Jane Burrows withdrew for personal reasons. Klimczak, a Lorain County resident for 34 years, holds an associate degree and has attended OSU and Kent State. She has attended nearly all city council and committee meetings for a decade, aiding understanding of Elyria’s finances. She will face Democrat Beverly Kenner.

Few Candidates Seek Elyria School Board Seats

The Elyria school board faces likely low voter interest as only one candidate, incumbent Robert Repas, has filed by the 4 p.m. Thursday deadline. Repas seeks a second term amid calls for a professional personnel department and a businesslike approach to labor relations. Other incumbents are not seeking reelection and one candidate plans to pursue city council.

New York City faced a surge in bank robberies as two more banks were robbed and a Brink's armored car heist yielded about 2 million dollars. Police and bank officials argued over security, noting a record pace with 125 banks held up in July and 119 by August 21 days.
