Reliable reports indicate Maj. Gen. William F. Dean was wounded captured and killed by Korean Communists at Taejon during the Taejon defense. Survivors and prisoners corroborate the assertion and say the general was slain after being shot and stabbed as retreat continued toward the southwest.

Lorain County Fair Opens in Wellington

The 95th Lorain County Fair opened at noon at Wellington’s fair grounds as exhibitors groom animals and the midway receives finishing touches. Kids Day drew many youngsters as rates opened and crowds scattered to view exhibits and activities.

Token Railroad Strikes Hit Two Belt Lines in U S

Trainmen and conductors extended their token strike to two major belt line railways in Chicago and Pittsburgh and threatened action against another. In Canada 125,000 non operating railroad workers launched a nationwide stoppage halting most trains and nearly all postal and telegraph services. The unions ignored President Truman’s plea to end rapid strikes and warned of further action against trunk lines. Presidential aide John Steelman planned to brief Truman after negotiations.

Northeast Ohio Weather Outlook Brightens Slow Warm Trend

Fair weather and a slow trend toward warmer temperatures this afternoon through Wednesday. Low tonight around 35, high Wednesday near 30. Five day forecast calls for scattered showers Thursday mainly in the south, totaling half to three quarters of an inch. Temperatures average two to four degrees below normal with cooler periods expected.

Extension Of Rent Control And City Zoning Actions

The Lorain city council considered extending rent control past December 31 and reviewed zoning changes for land on Fourth street alley and adjacent lots. Plans included warehousing for C W Barres Inc and a sports goods store at 1004 Lake Avenue, with some requests deferred for more use details. The council also set hearings, approved water and utility projects, and authorized vehicle and equipment purchases.

Fall From Ladder Fatal in West Manchester

Von N. Siler a 49 year old furniture merchant and funeral director of West Manchester was fatally injured after a 30 foot fall from an extension ladder while painting the front of his furniture store.

Elyria Parochial Schools Set to Open September 6

Most Elyria parochial schools will start the 1950 51 term September 6 with Holy Cross opening September 5. Orientation for about 125 freshmen will be held at Elyria District Catholic High School on September 6 and a sped up schedule will run through the week. New enrollments are expected up to the first day with about 400 students anticipated at the high school and four new teachers hired including Sister Mary Jucile and William Smythe.

N London Woman Drowns Near Vermilion Yacht Basin

Fanny Kate Smith, 41, daughter of Dr and Mrs T H Smith of New London, drowns in about ten feet of water near Vermilion Yacht Basin while ashore from a family cruiser. Body recovered by 1:30 pm. She belonged to First Baptist church and LeRoy Chapter OFE. Dr Smith, a local physician for 20 years, was active in Vermilion Yacht Club and a former commodore.

Elyria Bus Fare Boost Requested

The Elyria Coach Co asks city council for a substantial fare increase citing losses of 8639 last year and 4332 from January to July this year. President Harry Searles says no rate plan is fixed yet but core costs have risen sharply including buses fuel tires and labor. The request is referred to the transportation committee with books open for inspection to justify the need.

Five Lorain County civilian defense nominees named

Lorain mayor Patrick Flaherty announced a committee of Lorain county mayors has submitted five nominees for director of civilian defense. The list includes Col Arthur Musgrave Elyria Capt Courtney Kirby Elyria Retired Lorain Fire Capt John O Doherty Carlisle Fire Capt Harold Bruce and Elmer Fulmer Eaton. One nominee declined due to duties, another due to a chest drive schedule, with responses pending from O Doherty. In Columbus State Atty Gen Herbert S Duffy named W H Annat Wooster as chief counsel succeeding William C Bryant, who becomes Franklin County judge after Leach’s death.

Goodrich Plans Expansion Of Avon Lake Plant

B F Goodrich Chemical announces a major seven acre expansion of its Avon Lake general chemicals plant to be completed by mid 1951. New vinyl resin facilities will add 40,000 square feet and 75 to 100 workers, boosting neon polyvinyl chloride production for military and industrial needs.

The LaGrange Ischorl opening is postponed for one week this fall due to renovations. Classes begin normally after September 12, with a teachers meeting set for September 11, while other county schools start September 5.

103 Young Men Classified As 1 A

Draft Board Calls 25 Men for Induction

Elstia's local Board No 72 must provide a group of 25 draftees to the armed forces. State director Chester Goble ordered Elyria board to send the first group to Toledo for induction on Friday in September. The group will depart Elyria by bus at 7 10 am EST.
