Landon Starts East Campaign Tour Across Farm Belt

Part of salary increments paid to Flyrna teachers

The Flyrna school board began paying nearly two thirds of the February salary increments for teachers. About $12,000 has been sent this month with roughly $700 still due to complete payments. Those at maximum salaries and those to receive the full 3 year 90 percent rise face partial payments due to limited funds.

Miners Fight Mud to Reach Entombed Men in Mine Shaft

Miners labored in relays to move muck and timber toward a collapsed shaft where four men are trapped more than a mile below the surface. They hope to reach the level where the entombed workers lie in a 190 foot long, 12 foot wide area as rescue teams battle dangerous white damp and shifting debris. Names of entombed are Denner Seaton, Edward Stoner Jr, AO McCann, and George T Cameron. The scene drew 1,500 spectators as relatives and officials waited with dwindling hope.

Three Trainmen Die in Boiler Explosion Near Beckley

In Beckley West Virginia on August 29 a boiler explosion on a Chesapeake and Ohio freight locomotive killed three trainmen Blaine Simmons Raleigh Brown Nungalius Winton and Ray E Singer while another crew member Osh Hin Thehberler was blown clear. The engine derailed near a small bridge over the Piney River and the branch line traffic, mainly coal hauls, was halted.

Mrs. C. C. Allen Dies Sudden in California

Mrs. C. C. Allen, former Elyria dent, died suddenly yesterday in a Los Angeles hospital from a heart attack after a three day illness. She and her husband had lived in California ten years after leaving Elyria where Mr. Allen partnered in Allen and Brown furniture. They moved to Elyiria about 20 years ago from Lima. Funeral services are set for Friday in Glendale, California, with burial expected there.

German warships were ordered to shield German shipping from interference by Spanish government vessels beyond three miles from shore. The Foreign Office instructed the charge d affaires in Madrid to inform Spain of the directive, issued after two Spanish warships halted the Kamerun off Cadiz. The move aims to prevent repeats and protests were directed at Spanish actions amid the Spanish civil war.

Local Corps Seeks Seventh Ohio Drum and Bugle Title

Elyria's American Legion drum and bugle corps plans to win a seventh state championship at the Portsmouth convention. About 50 to 60 members travel by bus Sunday, with prize horse Lady Cream Puff to travel separately by truck. The corps performed last year to capture the sixth title and aims to repeat, while Lady Cream Puff will lead the Portsmouth parade Monday before Elyria returns.

Bauer Resigns As Investigator in Old Age Pension Office

Frederick M Bavey of Elyria resigns as investigator for the Old Age Pension office effective tomorrow. H J Berrodin, chief of the state division of aid for the aged, reports the action and provisional appointment of Marie Leahy of Oberlin to replace him at a salary of 87.50 a month. County Commissioner John E Davidson knew nothing of the change until receiving the communication. Bauer had been appointed a few months earlier.

The German vice-consul plans to depart San Sebastian with 25 German nationals as remaining there is deemed dangerous. Announcement made today.

Federal Elevator For Lazy Fish At Bonneville Dam

Washington reports that the federal government plans operation of electric elevators at the Bonneville dam on the Columbia River to help tired salmon ascend six floors. Army engineers designed all automatic air steel elevators with switches, sluiceways, and water streams to guide fingerlings safely upstream.

Will Try To Bring Body To Surface Of Quarry Hole

Efforts to raise the body of James Johnson, 28, who drowned in the quarry hole on West River Street near the Steel and Tubes Company, will be renewed next week if not surfaced sooner. Service Director I J Faxon said a dynamite charge will be used to stir the deep water in hopes of bringing the body to the surface. Firemen had dragged the bottom for 24 hours and then paused the search.

Civil War veteran C D Webster dies in Elyria

Elyria’s last surviving Civil War veteran, C D Webster, died at Elyria Memorial Hospital at 11 16 p m after a three week illness from a hip fracture fall He rode a horse in a Memorial Day parade less than three months ago as commander of Richard Allen Post No 65 G A R He was 17 when the war ended born October 17 1847 in Talmadge Ohio He enlisted in Cleveland served as a private in the 20th Battery Ohio Light Field Artillery He was wounded at Franklin losing sight in his right eye and hearing in his left ear He is survived by a sister Mrs Frances Bailey and several nieces and nephews He was a retired farmer and a member of First Methodist Episcopal Church and the G A R post Continued on Page 2.

Man And Wife Die In Michigan Car Crash Near Detroit

Arthur R. Anderson thirty, former Grant store manager, was killed in a head on collision near Howell Michigan. His wife Dorothy Rankin was fatally injured. Rankin's two children escaped serious injury. Robert Rankin Jr nine and Rae four witnessed the crash. Rankin Sr. left Elyria for Detroit upon learning of the accident. Anderson came from Chicago in October 1935 to manage the Elyria Grant store and had been transferred to Detroit six weeks earlier. Mrs. Anderson, Dorothy Shenk of Ashland, had acted in Elyria productions last year.

Four Hurt In Lake Road Crash Near Sunnyside Beach

Four persons suffered painful injuries at 4:20 p m yesterday when two cars collided on Lake Road near Sunnyside Beach west of Lorain. Drivers Peter Peazzione 24 of Detroit and Richard Wideman 22 of Lakewood escaped injury. Passengers Jay Sawyer 16 Jane Hoffman 18 Forest Slater 18 and Frank Di Fiore 24 all from Lakewood or nearby were treated at St Josephs Hospital Lorain for bruises broken nose lacerations and scalp injuries.

Toledo Strike Settled in Ohio Gas War

Toledo August 20 The Gas Employes Union accepted a settlement plan ending a strike that halted operations at Ohio Fuel Gas and Northwestern Ohio Natural Gas since August 10. Union members voted unanimously to return to work tomorrow after talks guided by Edward F. McGrady acting Secretary of Labor.
