Department Of Labor July Report Shows Large Job Declines
The Labor Department’s July report notes 359,000 private industry jobs lost and 10.46 million dollars in weekly wages shed. Factory employment fell 3 percent from June, the steepest drop since 1919 except for two other periods, with payrolls down 6 percent. Major declines hit the iron and steel sector, especially hardware, as July saw notable wage and employment reductions despite overall higher private employment than 1933 and higher wages than 1953.
