Panthers linebacker Mark Fields, 30, diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease after an infected thumb wound led to hospital hospitalization. He will miss the season, undergoing chemotherapy starting after tests confirmed the cancer. Fields expressed a hopeful outlook, while coach John Fox addressed the team.
Coach Butch Davis named Kelly Holcomb the starter over Couch after a seven month competition. Couch reacts with resolve, insisting he deserved a chance and pledging to excel as the backup while eyeing a future starting role. Davis says the move clarifies direction for the team and will be evaluated on Holcomb’s performance.
Cleveland faces a choice between Holcomb and Couch as Davis weighs a gut decision. Holcomb's aggressive downfield passes contrast with Couch's conservative style, while both quarterbacks wear the risk of injury and the need to remain mentally prepared for a long 16 week season.
Cleveland manager Eric Wedge announced that Danys Baez and David Riske will share the closer role for the season. Wedge later said Riske will close for a while, noting Riske earned the right to close and Baez will get a break. Riske, 26, 2-2 with a 2.51 ERA in 55 appearances, reflects on his longtime setup role.
Baez followed his rough start to the season with a scoreless, three-strikeout relief outing. Wedge praised Baez and Riske as the closer setup pair, while Riske discussed his new split-change as a key weapon. A ninth inning pinch run by Bean Tight stemmed from lineup juggling as Tampa Bay surged.
The Indians benefited from veteran leadership as Laker started, helping secure wins with seven of 26 opponent steal attempts thwarted. The team had gone 7-1 in the last eight home games he began, while Buffalo’s Brandon Phillips contributed a three-run homer in a 7-3 win over Scranton.
Albert Pujols was scratched from the St Louis Cardinals lineup Sunday in Philadelphia due to flu like symptoms ending his 30 game hitting streak the longest in the majors this season and the Cardinals longest since Stan Musial in 1950. Pujols was removed 30 minutes before game time and is expected to return when the Cardinals host Pittsburgh.
Ryan Ludwick drove in the go ahead run with a one out single in the 12th, lifting the Cleveland Indians to a 4 3 win over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Ludwick, hot in late innings, also tied the game in the 10th and has produced the game winning hit in three straight extra inning wins.
