Pioneer Elyria inventor Freese and the first practical submarine

A local history piece recalls Daniel Freese of Elyria and James D Gawn of Amherst as early submarine pioneers. It notes their 1894 patent grant for a Freese Gawn submarine, details its submerged operation, but explains they failed to secure funding. The story traces Freese’s life from Schleswig Holstein to Elyria, his family, and legacy.
