Lorain County Engineer Don E Patterson says the Vermont Street bridge at La Grange is unstable due to underground sand and gravel shifting below a north abutment. The 100 foot long span has moved about 3 1/2 feet in six to seven years and danger from this movement has led to a plan to remove the old bridge and erect a two lane replacement, possibly using the south abutment. A ten ton load limit has been in place for years.
