Firestone knew cheap part could make tires safer

In McAllen Texas court filings Bridgestone Firestone showed internal memos dating to 1998 noting nylon cap strips and shoulder strips reduced tread belt edge separations and that removal could save costs. The trial centers on a Ford Explorer rollover injuring a family. Firestone faces a $1 billion suit linked to 200 deaths and 700 injuries nationwide.

Two killed in Hollywood hotel fire tragedy

Fire at the Palomar Hotel in Hollywood killed a panicked mother and another person on the four story building. At least three residents, including the mother’s two children, and three firefighters were injured as more than 100 firefighters battled flames around 3 45 a m. The blaze began with an explosion near an elevator shaft and left the hotel gutted. Authorities consider the fire suspicious and believe no others remain trapped.
