Indians Rally Past Stieb In Ninth For 6-5 Win
Trailing 5-2 entering the bottom of the ninth, Cleveland’s bats came alive after Dave Stieb left the game. Andre Thornton’s two‑strike, go‑ahead single off Dennis Lamp capped a four‑run ninth inning as the Indians spoiled Stieb’s bid for win number 13. George Vukovich opened the rally with a single, bases loaded after a Bando walk and Carter’s pinch single. Thornton drove in two with a double, and Thornton’s final run came on Franco’s grounder and Hargrove’s RBI. The win marked Cleveland’s third straight over Toronto.

Miller rises atop rough round to lead women's golf open
Alice Miller survived a brutal start at the Chevrolet World Championship of Women's Golf in Shaker Heights with a four under 68 tying Betsy King for the lead. Nancy Lopez matched the old first day record of 69 and sits second with Laurie Rinker, as Miller credits grit from the rough for her scoring. Miller, who joined the tour in 1978, has already won two titles this year and faced a 6225 yard layout that yielded multiple under par scores. Her opening round included five birdies and one bogey with crucial saves from scrambling shots.
