Federal News Bureau in N Y Aug 17 reports Curtiss pilot Bertaud plans to fly from Felt to Rome tonight in the monoplane Old Glory. He will depart at 6 p m EDT with James Dewitt Hill as companion. Weather is favorable along the route aside from disturbances off Newfoundland.
Chaos grows in Shanghai as troopers and refugees converge while northern Nationalist advances press the Yangtze valley. British forces cut the Shanghai Bagchow railway spur on Soochow Creek after a Chinese official refused to surrender a downed British airplane. The plane was surrounded by Chinese troops and guarded by both sides after British trucks arrived. Local contingents from the Green Howards moved along the line toward a northern station.
Vandals invaded Ridge lawn cemetery wrecking monuments and urns. They smashed a rest room and damaged two large cement urns in front of the Troxel mausoleum. City service director James A. Hewitt warned of full punishment if suspects are caught.
Flood waters spread across Missouri and western Kansas after heavy rains. The Spring River near Carthage overran its banks inundating industrial areas in the city. Mount Vernon area reports rising waters. Hutchinson improvised dikes crumble threatening residential districts. Wichita warns of high Arkansas River. Western Kansas floods believed near crest with slight recessions noted in some towns.
George Van Anselm of Cleveland was found guilty of reckless driving after a drunken crash on Cleveland road. Justice 3 I. George imposed the maximum $100 fine plus costs Tuesday.
In Nublin Aug 17 rumors of a kidnapping circulated as Deputy John Jinks, a National League member, vanished amid a tied confidence vote. Captain Redmond claimed Jinks promised to oppose the government, then disappeared. Jinks’s fate could have toppled Cosgrave government. Also reports of Frank Panzos's injured foot at Elyria Iron and Steel Co. after a steel cutting incident. He was hospitalized.
Bartolomeo Vanzetti, writing from prison in Boston, declares his innocence in a message transmitted to United Press. The letter, dated Aug 7, discusses the Sacco and Vanzetti case and claims alibis for a Bridgeport robbery on Dec 24, 1919.
Lorain County voters face decisions on additions and new buildings for several townships. East Carlisle and Russia township plan centralization and new structures. Lorain and Columbia townships consider two-room expansions. Overlin and Elyria pupil shifts noted. Preparation underway as 1927 school year opens.
In Los Angeles on August 17, settlement of the Chaplin-Lita Grey divorce contest appeared almost inevitable as lawyers failed to file an amended complaint naming a prominent motion picture star as respondent. Chaplin returned to his Hollywood home and spent about half an hour playing with his two babies, whom he had not seen for nearly eight months.
Chicago Aug. American business leaders from major industries traveled to Chicago to pay final respects to Elbert H. Gary head of United States Steel. Gary's body was transported from New York to Wheaton Tenn. for lying in state at the Gary memorial church. Funeral services are scheduled for tomorrow morning.
Belmont County Sheriff Clyde Hardesty faces removal petitions presented to Gov. Donahey by Prosecuting Attorney Paul V. Waddell. Waddell carries twenty affidavits alleging drunkenness malfeasance and misfeasance linked to long standing disputes. A conference with Col. L. S. Connelly failed to resolve the breach as Connelly prepares a Belmont mine-field report for the governor.
Vimerson Poste formerly of Miyria Rotary Club and now with the Chattanooga Club addressed Elyria Rotarians yesterday on the upper Tennessee river development and its link to the Muscle Shoals project. The program also featured two tenor solos by Morris A. Scott with A. P. R. Saner accompanying.
Boston August 17 on recommendation of Governor Alvan T Fuller the executive council today approved a reward of 1000 for the apprehension and conviction of those responsible for yesterday's bombing of the East Milton home of Lewis McHardy a Sacco Vanzetti juror.
President Coolidge will visit the Pine Ridge Sioux reservation for an Indian pageant dubbed the largest war dance since Wounded Knee. The visit includes a welcome by Chief Blackhorn and a possible new Sioux name for Mr. Coolidge, with Mrs. Coolidge and an 80-strong White House retinue.
Cuyahoga county commissioner John C G Fisher and engineer Frank J Landers of Cleveland visited Elyria to aid local officials in awarding the Sprague road paving contract from Root road to West View. Bids revealed discrepancies in lump sum and unit bids and completion dates. contract award postponed to Thursday in Cleveland. Four firms from Elyria, Lorain, and Sandusky bid, with totals from 121,931 to 126,085 dollars.
Dr. J Gordon Mekhar head of the U S Highway Economies division and three assistants arrive to start what is billed the most comprehensive scientific road survey in the Western Reserve. The study follows a meeting last month with 400 public officials from northeastern Ohio and is expected to last about ten days.
Oakland Cal Aug 17 Four planes tracked the air lane to Hawaii but only Arthur C Goebel's Woolaroc reported its position at half hour intervals. The other three planes lacked radio. Miss Mildred Doran, a 22 year old Michigan teacher, was aboard one of the trio and said, I know we'll get there.
The body of J Ogden Armour, millionaire Chicago packer, who died yesterday in London, will be brought back for burial in Chicago. Funeral services are expected around August 25. His death ends a brilliant career in the world of large enterprises. he was noted for his rise as a Yale junior.

Charles A Lindbergh, famed trans Atlantic aviator, began a national tour for commercial aviation by departing from the St. Louis Lumber Field at 10:30 a m for Kansas City. The leg continues his campaign to boost United States aviation interests.
