The Chronicle Telegram poll of 1,973 readers shows 80 percent support firing the striking air traffic controllers as the correct response. About 396 oppose, citing union-busting and bad faith bargaining, while 1,577 back Reagan, noting the controllers swore oaths and violated terms.
Affidavits were presented in relation to workers giving up their right to strike. The documents center on labor actions and legal assertions surrounding collective bargaining and industrial dispute procedures.
Lorain and nearby districts face higher meal costs after Reagan budget cuts end all milk subsidies and reduce reimbursements. Schools tally losses, set new lunch prices up to $1, with 70 percent of meals previously free or reduced now at risk, while districts seek break-even plans and alternate service lines.
Iraq's Al Thawra newspaper calls for a unified OPEC pricing and production policy at Geneva talks. It blames Saudi Arabia for the oil glut by pumping about 10.3 million barrels per day and charging over $40 for North African crude versus $32 elsewhere.

The FAA mapped alternate routes as Portugal’s 300 air traffic controllers prepare a 48 hour boycott of US trans Atlantic flights starting at 8 PM. ANOP and the International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers urged restraint while 12,000 US controllers are affected by the dispute.
An aviation dispute over the PATCO strike and Portuguese boycott disrupts Atlantic air routes. Feldman notes added air lanes will handle 14 flights hourly, while FAA and Transportation Secretary Lewis discuss decertification and worker reinstatement amid firings and fear of retribution claims.
