Lorain County Fair Opens With Thousands Of Exhibits

The 1958 Lorain County Fair at Wellington starts Monday with thousands of exhibits across agricultural and mechanical classes. Horse day dominates the opening, with a grandstand saddle horse show and Leo Carillo Panda show. The Junior Fair features dress, livestock parades, and dancing to Johnny Vadnal. Tractor pulling headlines Friday.

Police Seize 3 More Escapees Strike Hits Elyria Plant

Police report three more escapees captured while a strike halted most operations at General Industries Co as Locals 15 and 18 of MESA voted to strike. About 850 MESA members and 80 from Local 89 of IWC are expected to honor picket lines Monday. Negotiations for a new contract remain stalemated with an extension ending tonight. A company spokesman claims the offer includes a three cent wage hike this year and five cents next year, while MESA demands ten cents cash plus fringe benefits.

22 Die In Airliner Crash Rush St. Buildings Destroyed

An early afternoon airliner crash near Nantucket killed 22 of 34 aboard and injured others. The Convair shattered on impact near the Nantucket Airport, causing a massive fire that destroyed frame storage buildings and engulfed a brick main structure.
