James Webb Space Telescope faces delays and budget overruns
Washington debates the James Webb Space Telescope while delaying its 2014 launch. Sen Barbara Mikulski orders an independent panel to verify cost limits amid a budget overrun of at least 1.5 billion dollars, three years behind schedule. NASA assigns John Casani to lead reviews as scientists warn of funding strains on space science. The Webb promises to peer back to the dawn of the universe and identify the first galaxies, despite engineering challenges and funding pressures.
