Law explains nedowhile's promotion in priest abuse cases
Boston AP reports Cardinal Bernard Law defended promoting priests despite abuse claims, citing reliance on subordinate recommendations and scattered records. Transcripts show Law acknowledged a 1966 Shanley complaint but did not review his file, while new depositions reveal continued histories of reassignment of alleged abusers and policy changes mandating reporting and removal of credibly accused priests. The article notes Shanley's 71 year old status, his pending trial for child rape, and the archdiocese's broader scandal involving John Geoghan and numerous allegations.
