Columbia Gas Sues Brown Fintube Over Elyria Plant Closures
Columbia Gas of Ohio filed a complaint against Brown Fintube Co for non payment of gas bills. The Huron Street plant in Elyria owed $25,508.19 dating from March and the Woodford Street plant closed in November. The case was assigned to Lorain County Common Pleas Court Judge Adrian Betleski.

Lorain fire officials report the arson investigation may have reached a dead end after a $78,000 blaze gutting Miguel Cruz and family’s 1941 West Side home on West 27th Street. Fire started around 6 am with carpet samples in the living room testing positive for a flammable substance.

Lawn turfing and gunfire in Henrietta Township incident
Kenneth Bennett, 43, says a dark pickup drove onto his Vermilion Road lawn about 12:25 a.m. and he fired five shots from a handgun as the vehicle fled. He believes two rounds may have hit the pickup. Bennett tried to chase the truck but could not locate it. His son had previously set up boards with nails on the lawn to deter turfing. Sheriff’s Department investigators are reviewing the case.

Abduction suspect pleads not guilty in Oberlin case
Lloyd E. Goodwin, 25, of 43 Astor Court New London, pleaded not guilty to abduction and aggravated burglary in Oberlin Municipal Court. Police say he threatened Jeanne A. VonKamp at her home with a .22 rifle Saturday. A preliminary hearing was set for August 27. Goodwin is free on $20,000 bond.

Lorain approves Columbia Gas rate plan four-year contract
Lorain City Council approved a four-year Columbia Gas of Ohio rate agreement in a special session. The base rate drops three tenths of a percent next year and rises 3 percent each of the following three years with the city negotiating separately rather than joining a coalition.
