Shanghai Extraterritoriality Fears Echo in Postwar China
A dated Shanghai dispatch discusses the mood of pessimism as extraterritorial privileges wane. It notes Russians losing protections, Germans returning stronger, and the complex legal reach of foreign courts. It explains how foreign residents in China are judged by their own nations laws while Chinese authorities cannot detain or prosecute them locally. It highlights abuses of the system while arguing its perceived necessity for foreign safety despite corruption in Chinese tribunals.
