Talks stall as USX contract dispute grinds on
United Steelworkers say talks with USX Corp. have halted with 22,000 union members idle since Aug. 1 over wage and benefit concessions. Union leaders accuse the firm of inflating labor costs to gain concessions while the company cites total blue-collar costs. Industrywide costs and proposed savings are debated as the 12th day of stoppage continues with no contact. The union plans to tap a $210 million strike fund after four weeks unless negotiations resume.
