Oberlin mother pedals solo to childhood home
Florence Hughes, 62, rode alone from Oberlin to Littleton Massachusetts this summer with a small front pouch and a two-man tent on a rear rack. Beginning May 21 at Peninsula National Park, she biked through Lake Erie shore, Buffalo, Rochester, the Finger Lakes, and the Berkshires, finishing June 20. She quit smoking years ago to stay fit, credits supportive strangers for encouragement, slept at campgrounds or hostels, cooked on a makeshift stove, and plans another bicycle tour of Ohio.
