Population boom imperils India grain hopes says experts
In New Delhi India's population reached 625.8 million at end of 1977 and grows about 2 percent yearly. If trend continues India would surpass 1 billion by century's end, needing over 200 million tons of grain annually. Despite grain gains from 50 to 125 million tons since 1947, monsoon dependence and cultural factors hinder progress. Experts warn government risks political fallout if birth rates stay unchecked.
